148 (Barnsley) Squadron operates within the Royal Air Force Air Cadets' (RAFAC) national safeguarding framework — the same policies and checks apply at every squadron across the country. This page sets out what that means in practice: the checks our staff go through, what a normal parade night looks like, and how to raise a concern.

Enhanced DBS checks
Every adult member of staff holds an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before they work with cadets. Checks are renewed on a fixed cycle — [Squadron to confirm the exact renewal interval].
MOD security clearance
Staff also hold Ministry of Defence security vetting appropriate to their role. Vetting is kept under periodic review — [Squadron/RAFAC policy to confirm the exact review frequency].
Qualified to run every activity
Anyone running an activity — flying, fieldcraft, adventure training and the rest — holds the RAFAC qualification for it. Any activity away from the squadron is risk-assessed in writing and approved above squadron level before it goes ahead.
First aid, every time
A qualified first aider is present at every parade night, and on every activity away from the squadron.

Never one-to-one
There are always at least two adults present — no cadet is ever alone with a single member of staff.
Signed in, signed out
Cadets are signed in and signed out at every parade night, so staff always know who is collecting whom.
Concerns acted on
Any concern raised is recorded and escalated — [Squadron to confirm the timescale we commit to for escalation].

You do not need to be certain to raise it. If something doesn't feel right — about a cadet's welfare, or about anything you've seen or been told — tell someone. Every concern is taken seriously, whether it turns out to be nothing or not.
